Will My Car Insurance Cover Me in Other States?

In the U.S., auto insurance requirements are decided by each state, meaning that the amount of insurance you must carry in one state may change when you cross state lines. However, this does not mean you need to change your policy or coverage when traveling.

As a rule, your coverage will automatically change as you are traveling to adjust to your location.a car parked on the side of a road

For example, all drivers in North Carolina must carry at least:

  • $30,000 bodily injury liability per person

  • $60,000 bodily injury liability per accident

  • $25,000 property damage liability

On the other hand, the auto insurance requirements in South Carolina are:

  • $25,000 bodily injury liability per person

  • $50,00 bodily injury liability per accident

  • $25,000 property damage liability

If you travel from North Carolina to South Carolina, your auto insurance coverage will immediately change to the proper requirements. It doesn’t hurt to check with your insurer, but you generally do not need to worry about changing your auto insurance before taking a trip in the U.S.

What Happens to My Car Insurance if I Move?

The same should apply if you move, although there are certain exceptions. When you move, it is a large concern about whether or not your insurer still covers your new state. Many insurers only cover certain states or locations. If you move states, be sure to ask your insurance agent about whether or nor they will cover you in your new location. Also be sure to review and understand the traffic laws of your new state, as these—and the repercussions for breaking them—can also vary.

Does U.S. Car Insurance Carry into Other Countries?

As you can imagine, laws regarding car insurance differ between countries, as well. In many countries, such as Mexico, U.S. auto insurance is not considered valid. Instead, you will either be required to purchase auto insurance specific for that country or otherwise purchase an endorsement. Some insurers offer Mexico auto insurance endorsements for individuals who travel to Mexico, for example. Speak with your insurance agent about any endorsements or additional coverages they may offer.

Even if you are just taking a road trip across the U.S., you may need higher limits of coverage for the increased risk of an accident. Insurance agents are there to help so ask any questions you may have to guarantee that you and your vehicle are covered no matter where you travel.
